Goals and Performance Antti J. Hätinen Seminar on User Interfaces and Performance Department of Computer Science University of Helsinki 18.2.2004, 15 pages To build the optimum combination of both social and technical systems in an organisation one must use the goals of the whole organisation as the starting point. We can design the social system by goals (Management by Objectives by Drucker) and also the technical system by goals (Goal oriented User Interface Design by Sari Laakso). The total performance (the valuable production compared to used resources) of the organisation can therefore maximized when the performance of the both subsystems are maximized. The human performance can be increased by raising the motivation by introducing specific and challenging goals on each level of organisation. The technical systems are used by humans as tools to perform business processes, and can be optimized by reducing the cycle and processing times using goal derived user interface design.
